Change begins with me: a parable

Change must start with ME!

“I was walking down the street as a homeless woman started walking toward me. I said to myself and Holy Spirit, ‘Lord please don’t make me speak to her, she probably sounds crazy.’ He whispered to me, ‘How do you think you sounded to me before you got saved?’. I was properly chastised so I decided I would speak.

Then I said to Him, ‘Okay Lord, but please distract me so I don’t have to look at her tattered and dirty clothes.’

He chuckled at me and replied, ‘How do you think you looked before I put the robe of righteousness around you?’.

I was properly chagrined by that statement. It stung a bit but I decided when I spoke to her I would look her directly in the eyes and be as cordial as possible.

My moment of meeting with this woman was fast approaching when I got a whiff of the body odor and stench that was coming from her. So I quickly said to God, ‘Lord I’m going to speak and move on because this woman really, really stinks!’. In a matter of a heartbeat, I heard thunder from the Throne of Grace with the words attached, ‘My child, how do you think your stench of sin smelled to me before My Son covered you in His Blood?’.

I was speechless by the time I reached that woman. It was all I could do to see her through my repentant and grateful tears. When I met that woman on the street I greeted her and asked if I could have a moment of her time. I told her of God’s Mercy on my life. I told her how she may be homeless but I was soul-less when Jesus met me on the street. I thanked her for stopping to talk to me and I asked her if it was alright to embrace and hug her even though I didn’t deserve her kindness and love. She let me.

God used a true angel to change my mind about those I see.

I now know change begins with me.”
