The Power of Negative Agreement

What are you agreeing with against “your will”?

How many times have you had a conversation with a friend, family member or coworker and they’ve said something you truly don’t agree with but for the sake of not having to explain yourself or coming off weird, you don’t disagree? Have you ever stood silent or giggled your way through a conversation instead of presenting your truth so you won’t “offend” someone else’s belief system? Do you take a stand for what you believe or do you just nod for convenience sake?

For instance, many people, when they find out my birthday is in December, they automatically say something about me being a Sagittarius. I SO don’t believe in astrology, numerology and zodiac signs. I may have been born in the world under the stars but I was reborn under the Blood of Jesus. I don’t act like the predictions of the movement of stars in relation to the positions of the planets. I am taking on the mind of Christ therefore neither He NOR me can be pinned down or be predictable. So instead of just nodding or laughing it off or letting that person call me what I am not, I gently correct them. I tell them I don’t believe in zodiacs and such. Most times they will say something like “Oh I don’t believe in that stuff either.” or “Well it’s just fun.” If you don’t believe in it, then why are you BELIEVING IN IT?? If it’s just fun, then why do you live as if it has true meaning?? But I digress…

I know they don’t mean any harm and they are “just talking” but you don’t have to be a believer in the Bible in order for the principle of the power of the tongue to be effective and affect your life. Death and life are in the power of the tongue… Saying, “Oh you’re a sagittarius.” may not seem to have power over me, but there is strength in AGREEMENT.

Amos 3:3 says, “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?”

It only takes one time of agreeing with a negative statement about something or agreeing with a system of this world for it to get trapped within your soul. You are aligning yourself together with whatever you agree to. (Deep huh?) Life is not a person having a physical body with spiritual experiences. True Life is a Spirit (wo)man having a physical experience on earth. While we are within time, we experience and come into contact with all kinds of beliefs, tenet, credo and traditions. We must discover Truth through our exposure to situations, people and things. When we do find Truth, we align ourselves to that Truth and we come into AGREEMENT with it. Therefore, it is up to us to hold to, keep faith in and be steadfast in our Truth. If holding onto your Truth (which for the believer is Jesus is God, Savior and King of the Universe and His Word is pure and TRUTH) means offending someone else’s truth, then offend you must do. If you truly do not believe in what someone is saying about you then you must stand up for yourself and reject the untruth and gently but as firmly as possible.

We have to be bold yet loving and humble when we refuse to agree with what we don’t believe in. Standing firm in what you do believe will not always be convenient. Nor will it always make the way easy. By simply not agreeing with a seemingly insignificant belief system of this world can cause another person’s ire to rise. But it will make them think if you challenge their “truth”. It will push them to pause and ponder what Truth really is rather than what they have just accepted. Not being in AGREEMENT with all that is said and done may be the catalyst, if you will, the seed of Truth being planted that will make a person see the light of God and reject the dark systems and beliefs of this world. Listen carefully to what people are saying. Then agree or disagree as appropriate. But do not agree with untruth for convenience sake. It will only make the devil laugh at you in the end.
