Hey. Did you know i used to be a flight attendant?
Back in the day, when i was on reserve, i used to get assigned trips which my airline called “open ended.” This meant they didn’t have an actual flight assignment for me yet but would fly me out to another base operation of flying, which would then determine where I will go next, based upon operational need. For instance, I was based in Chicago but Newark, New Jersey was short -staffed. Although the company knew I was needed in EWR, my actual assignment of routes & flights wouldn’t be given until after I was in position. Whether I was going to fly a domestic trip or an international trip after I was in Newark was completely up to the schedulers. Either way, I was to be prepared beforehand with everything I might need, like passport, wine opener, 3-4 days of clothes, etc to fill in for whatever trip i was assigned. But I had to be put in place first, before the actual operational need was adequately fulfilled.
Our lives in Christ sometimes seem “open ended” as well. Holy Spirit may give us instructions to go to a place where He will show us, just as He did Abram. God is doing so because He has operational need of our gifting and anointing in that place. We may not understand where we are going after we get the first assignment. But in obedience to the voice of God, we must allow Him to put us in position to be of use, regardless of the direction He may send us. It is our job as the sent ones to be prepared in His Word, prayed up and ready to do HIS will before we are sent on assignments. You never know if you’re going to minister healing, deliverance or work a miracle until after you are in position. By moving through our obedience without knowing the outcome before the beginning, we show God we trust Him to “close out” our trip to our ultimate destination, which short term Him receiving glory and ultimately our reward, heaven and eternal life.
It is when we don’t know the details of our trip in Christ that our faith is grown and the Grace or power of God is demonstrated. We won’t always know where God is sending us or why. But we can be assured, God’s thoughts and plans are so much greater than we can imagine and He is holding us in the Palm of His incredible Hand. We can go knowing He will “close us out” doing His will and giving Him glory.
So trust Holy Spirit, even when it seems He’s sending you “open ended”. Ultimately the trip He is sending you on will lead to a destination that is greater than you can ever dream of or conceive!
