My Daddy and My Father

Matthew 23:9 (The Message) “Don’t set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of ‘Father’; you have only one Father, and he’s in heaven.”

If you know me, you know I am a card-carrying, officially certified Daddy’ girl! I love my Daddy!! In my opinion he is a great man, husband, parent and friend. My Daddy honestly thinks it is his responsibility to worry about his children. Constantly. He leads us in a Godly fashion, helps me and my brothers with life’s biggest decisions and even gives a lecture or two when he feels we’re way off course. My Daddy! We call him “The Big Kahuna” because he loves to spoil us by taking us out to see the world. Maui, Hong Kong, Port-au-Prince and Paris are a few of the places where I’ve been with him and he always insists on treating. I could go on and on about how much I love him.

So when I read the scripture in Matthew 23, I was taken aback. Why can’t I call my Daddy “Father”? What is so wrong with that?

Upon further review, I understand what God means by this scripture. As much as my Daddy means to me, God wants to be My Father, the source, the provider of all I need and want. As much as my earthly parent my do for me My Heavenly Father can do so much more. My Daddy has imperfections and faults. My Father is Holy and Perfect. I can trust Him to never let me down. Everything my Daddy has done will not compare to the blessings God has in store for my life. As many places that I’ve been with my Daddy won’t matter when my Father places me where He wants me to go. My Daddy can’t possibly know everything I’m thinking. But my Father is able to do exceeding, abundantly more than I can ask or think.

I have a great Daddy! He ranks up there with the best. But as much as I love my Daddy, I can’t count on him to give me eternal life. It is the love and relationship I have with Father which enables me to live in freedom and know where I’ll spend eternity. I’m grateful He has made provision for me to be a part of His royal family.

Arthur Jackson, Happy Daddy’s Day. You are the best Daddy a girl could ever hope for. I love you with all my heart.

Heavenly Father, Happy Father’s Day. You are Alpha and Omega and the Universe’s Greatest Father. I worship, adore and reverence You with all my heart, mind and soul.
