Family. How many of us have them?
When I asked myself this question, I had to really stop and go beyond the surface meaning of the term family. Sure, we are all born into this world via a mother and a father. Yet all of us cannot say that we know what it’s like to have a family. A family is defined as a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household or all the descendants of a common ancestor. Yet family has a more meaningful explanation.
In the true sense of the previous definition of family, i believe the word relative is more appropriate. Through life experiences I’ve learned this: a relative I could not choose but I can certainly choose and be chosen by family. Family, in my definition is a group of people, who may or may not be related by blood, that support, honor and love one another through the good and bad times we call life. They walk closer than friends and have relationships and bonds that transcends d.n.a. strands.
I know many people can feel me in this. How many children have been given away or discarded by a relative but chosen by an adoptive or foster parent? How many women have be nurtured and taught how to be a lady by a woman who was not her own mother? How many men have been abandoned by their natural father but another man stepped up to be a true Dad? I could go on with hundreds of examples of how a relative did not meet the expectation and definition of family but a stranger can become closer than a brother or sister, mother or father.
This month for the GGMI S. O. A. K. Calendar, we are studying and meditating on the subject of FAMILY. The Greek and Hebrew words for family are similarly defined the same way as the American version. Yet we know that when God Almighty talks about family, He is talking about way more than blood relationships. God Himself showed us the importance of family when He sent Jesus to Earth and declared to the the world: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”. The Message puts it like this: “This is my Son, chosen and marked by my love, delight of my life.” God could have called Jesus His Messenger, His Servant or even My Incarnation. Instead God called Jesus His Son. Family.
Throughout the Word of God, God reminds us that He is Abba, holy and righteous Father. Jesus is His only begotten Son but we are His adopted and engrafted sons and daughters. From the beginning, Adonai desired to have RELATIONSHIP as a FAMILY with Him and each other. This month’s calendar is designed to refocus and reinforce the idea that we are not just relatives of God but we are chosen by God to be HIS FAMILY. As you script, observe and apply the Word of God concerning you this month, it is my prayer that you will include those that you consider your family in your study and prayer focus. Our Father desires for us to have healthy and true relationship with Him as Daddy God as well as those around us. It’s my prayer that some of the relatives you’ve distanced yourself from can become family once again. It’s also my prayer that you will expand your definition to include those who God has desired for you to include as your own family. This is my sincere prayer for you and for me.
Please comment on how this calendar has affected your life this month.
