February 2019 is the month of Love
Eros: Greek; the sum of life-preserving instincts that are manifested as impulses to gratify basic needs, as sublimated impulses, and as impulses to protect and preserve the body and mind: sexual desire
Storge: Greek; family love, the affectionate bond that develops naturally between parents and children, and brothers and sisters.
Philia: Greek; type of intimate love in the Bible that most Christians practice toward each other, the powerful emotional bond seen in deep friendships.
Agape: Greek; unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another: such as the fatherly concern of God for humankind, brotherly concern for others; God’s immeasurable, incomparable love for humankind; the divine love that comes from God; love which is perfect, unconditional, sacrificial, and pure.
Thousands of songs, soliloquies, poems and oratory have been written on the subject of love. It’s a word which is often times taken for granted in everyday speech: “I love this jacket” and “Don’t you just love it when we go down this street.”. Yet there is nothing ordinary about love. True love will make you want to leap for joy, sing songs with birds and shed tears over nothing-ness . Unrequited love haunts you and will throw you into depths of despair. Rejected and scorned love can plunge you into darkness, if you aren’t careful.
As much as we think we know about love, it pales in comparison to what True Love really means. The Scriptures tell us in 1 John 4: 8 that “God is Love”. Whew. In those three words the sum of God is revealed to us. God Almighty, the King of kings, the Ancient of Days, is pure love. An all-encompassing, pure, unconditional, sacrificial, perfect love which, when you surrender to it, destroys yokes, erases fears, soothes hurts and uncovers then covers faults and sins. God is that kind of love.
During the month of February, take the time to S.O.A.K. in Love. Discover for the next 28 days how much God truly loves you and how much you can open your heart up to trust and love Him in return. There are only 28 scriptures on this calendar but if we truly think about it, the entire Word, from Genesis to Revelation is God’s Love Letter to Mankind. Some of these scriptures this month may challenge you to think about your love life in a whole new way. Let it. Immersive yourself in the Love of God and draw near to the Lover of your soul.
