April 2020 – Relationship

Pictures of my family on different occasions. Relationship matters.

Relationships. How many of us have them?

Uhmmm. Elder Andrea, in case you haven’t heard, we are in the middle of a P A N D E M I C here in the USA. What does relationship have to do with anything right now?

I’m so glad you asked.

Throughout the history of mankind, there have been dark times. There has always been one constant that allowed human beings to survive: relationship with God and relationships with other people. Here in the United States, many of us have been forced into self-isolation and quarantine. We are so used to having our freedom, being able to go to work or school, play with our friends and hand out in social gatherings. Suddenly, without warning, our most basic need to touch, feel and commune with other people has been taken away. And it hurts. Suddenly, we are forced to stay in our homes and spend time with family and two people we tend to avoid the most: self and God.

It is during times of isolation and quiet that we can do one of two things: we can find a million and three things to distract us or we can take a good look at ourselves in the proverbial mirror and meet our self for the first time in a long time. Now the excuse of I don’t have time to evaluate my relationship with others is truly stripped away. How do I treat my spouse? Do I really know my kids? Am I looking at my parents through a lens of childhood hurt? Now we have the time required to do a thorough examination of the relationships we say we hold dear.

During this forced sabbatical we can also examine and define, without interruption, what a relationship with God truly means. We say we know God as a Savior, King, Father, Comforter and Protector. However, what does that mean to you on a relational level? From the beginning, Elohim created everything with one goal in mind: to prepare a place for man to inhabit. All that He saw was good those first 5 days. Yet in the 6th day, He made His greatest creation: a physical manifestation of His desire to have relationship with Himself. Relationship with God and with each other is the primary reason for everything else.

This month’s S. O. A. K. Calendar is designed to help re-establish our relationships with each other and with God. To prove God’s point. the Word, from the beginning to the revelation, has been one long love letter full of His desire to establish and maintain a relationship with His people. The first commandment God gave to Israel was given to establish what type of relationship God wants with us: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. The second type of relationship He defines is with each other:‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Healthy, strong and loving relationships are what God desires for us, especially during times like these. Take the time this month to ready, study and observe how God pursues His relationships. Pray and ask God to show you yourself and how you conduct your friendships, associations and relationships with family and foes. Take the time, while you are sitting in your homes and build a relationship that will last a lifetime and for all eternity with the One who WANTS and desires a fellowship with you.
