The Spiritual Importance of Financial Health

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous. Proverbs 13:22

That is a good scripture. I love it. I desire to leave an inheritance for my children and grandchildren, yet in my current financial situation, it would be something if I could leave them $50. Yep. It’s like that.

My finances have been in disarray for quite some time. (Yes another transparent moment, brought to you by the Global Girl Ministries’ Broadcast System.) I retired 5 ½ years ago from a career that left me with a small lump sum buy-out and no pension. What I saved up for retirement was quickly eaten up because my next career opportunity wasn’t as financially sound as I had hoped it would be. Though I’ve been looking, I haven’t found a job that would give me a secure financial future until I could draw my meager Social Security benefits. I’ve literally been living off of the grace and provisions of God, and my family. I thank God for Him blessing me.

Yet. I. KNOW. God. desires. MORE. For me, I have an educational background in business. Yes. I went to Florida A & M University’s School of Business and Industry. I studied accounting before I left school. I was schooled in stocks, bonds, the financial markets and more. I knew how to invest and monitor the Wall Street Journal for daily reports of price fluctuations and dividend returns. I even knew, once upon a time, how to read a corporation’s annual report easily. However, when I left school and started my career in aviation, I (easily and gratefully) left the business acumen behind. Sure I knew how to talk business, but I used my education to easily make CEOs and business men and women comfortable as I flew them to and fro around the world.

I had a 401(k) retirement account and a few IRA accounts. I also had savings accounts and regular checking but I never took the time to open a trading account, invest in real estate (other than my home) or look into investments that would bring me a return on the money I was earning. Hindsight is 20/20 and very humbling. Proverbs 13: 4 says, “The soul of a lazy (wo)man desires, and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.” OUCH and amen. Here I am, now in my early 50’s looking to invest in something that I could have utilized to my advantage years ago. Nevertheless, it’s never too late.

Some say the Bible is contradictory in it’s message about wealth, riches and material possessions. I beg to differ with their assertion. I believe that God is very direct about His desire for us to have wealth. In fact, in 1 Timothy 5: 8 it says, “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” He is also explicit about how He wants us to think about and use that wealth. It’s not a contradiction, rather it is a distinction between having wealth and believing wealth makes you somehow better than those who don’t have it. Throughout the Word of God, Abba God shows himself to be the provider of blessings to those who obeyed His will and walked in righteousness. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all were blessed with great wealth. Job was a man of extraordinary wealth. David was wealthy. Solomon was STUPID wealthy, rich and loaded. God was not stingy towards them, with the blessings of heaven being poured out amongst them tremendously.

The Bible says in 3 John 2, “Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers.” I literally have taken that to understand that as I grow in the knowledge and understanding of God and His Word, He desires that my prosperity and health be in proportion to the increase of my soul capacity! The more I understand about God, my provider, the more I understand He does not desire His bride to be without, struggling and looking like an abandoned wife. The Scriptures tell me:

“But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” Deuteronomy 8:18 NIV

There are keys to producing wealth. It’s not just going to fall from the heavenly coffers and land in my bank account. There is spiritual importance and steps to financial health:

First, I must recognize that the work is about me. Not about my parents and what they did or did not do. Not about my children and what they will and will not do. It’s all about me. Present tense. What will I do to submit myself to the vision that God has given me to pursue and obtain wealth? It’s up to me to work and reap a harvest or stay asleep on the job.

I must and shall remember the Lord my God. He is my El Shaddai, The All-Sufficient One. In Him I have everything I need. It is from Him all my visions come and it is from His hand that I will receive the pro for the vision.

When Abba God gave me the keys of heaven, He also gave me the ability to produce through my actions. It’s not enough to hear Word concerning my wealth. I must do the Word as well.

There is death and life in the power of the tongue. What good is it to desire wealth and riches but constantly confess death over my bank accounts, bills and financial obligations? I must speak life to my power to obtain or produce wealth.

I have opportunities to obtain wealth not just money. Wealth is more than numbers in a bank or trust. Wealth is the ability to give without hesitation or restrictions. There is an unlimited amount of resources available when you are wealthy in health, strength, hope, love and finances. It’s about multiple streams of income. It’s also about multiple avenues of outreach, giving and sowing into others.

I don’t want to be wealthy just to have money, a nice house and a few new whips. I want wealth to leave an inheritance to my children and grandchildren, to the ministry God has entrusted me with and to continue to establish the Kingdom of God in the congregation of my community.

Proverbs 6: 6-8 says “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.” (English Standard Version) I don’t have time to waste in regrets, but I will start from here and build the wealth that God has for me to obtain before I leave this earth. I am studying, getting advice from friends and acquaintances that have expertise in finances and using the abilities and talents God has given me to begin my nest egg for my future and that of my children. 1 Timothy 6: 17-19 warns us not to put our trust in uncertain riches but in the Living God. OH how I know money and riches are uncertain. One minute your up and next your truly down to the pennies in your jar. It is up to me to build up a resistance to the enticement of riches and use what God has given so freely to the Glory and upkeep of His Kingdom. I don’t ever want to put myself in the position of thinking it’s money or wealth that keeps me safe and grounded. Rather it is the foundation of Jesus Christ in which I have my greatest wealth. By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life. (Proverbs 22:4) Wealth serves me, not the other way around.

Our financial health is important to our Heavenly Father. He will not keep us out of heaven if we use the tools He has provided to establish His Kingdom and provide for His people. The tools aren’t evil, it’s the love of the tools or money that leads to all evil. Abba God desires that we operate out of the abundance of His wealth. Why else would He talk about blessings, wealth and riches so often in the Word. He has planned and provided for all of us to obtain wealth. He is not a respecter of men and their personalities. He has freely given this ability, this power to obtain wealth to all who desire to receive. It’s up to us to build up our financial wealth to match the prosperity of our souls. The more we become one with Him, the more we will understand that our Father owns the world and gives us dominion over it. He will make the wicked turn over their wealth to the righteous and bring about a shift in the Kingdom of God. Let’s build up our resistance to the idea of poverty and lack and tear down the false teachings of the past that say we can’t be humble and rich at the same time. It’s important to the future of our families as well as the building and upkeep of the Kingdom. Prosper and be in great financial health. It’s literally your birthright!
